School News: Meadow Lark Montessori School Children Go Green

As a real-life extension of Meadow Lark Montessori’s students’ study of South America, they’re combining their reading with an ability to help preserve acreage of rainforest along the northern coast of Ecuador in an area known as Choco Forest. Scholastic book company is rewarding classrooms of students with the knowledge that they’re contributing to the preservation of 100 acres of rainforest in Choco Forest by reading 100 books by Earth Day on April 22, 2008. Each child in Meadow Lark’s preschool, kindergarten, and elementary classes is reading 5 books per week. Some of the older children are helping the younger ones by reading to them. The children are excited about their newfound knowledge of South America as well as the ability they’ve achieved to help the Indians, animals, and plant-life in Choco Forest to remain.

The outgoing spirit of the school not only promotes individual development of each child, but, a community awareness as well. The students are helping others to celebrate Valentine’s Day by making and taking Valentines to Brighton Care Center and the Pediatric ward at Platte Valley Medical Center. The Brighton Care Center seniors will be entertained by the Meadow Lark students as they perform 3 songs they’ve learned to play with hand bells.

The valuable education the children receive is enhanced with their experiences of sharing and becoming participants in creating a caring, giving society.
